Leads count raw numbers in each category. Larger is not always stronger: a modern fleet can beat a bigger, older one.

The most lopsided matchup that matters

China spent an estimated $336 billion on its military in 2025, about 18 times Taiwan’s $18.2 billion. It has nearly nine times as many active personnel, five times as many tanks and many times as many ships and aircraft.

Taiwan’s defence rests on making an invasion too costly rather than matching China ship for ship. The Taiwan Strait is roughly 130 to 180 kilometres wide, and any amphibious landing would be among the most difficult military operations ever attempted. Taiwan has been buying mobile missiles, drones and air defences suited to that kind of fight, and its spending rose 14% in 2025.

The factor not in the table

The biggest variable is outside both columns: whether the United States and its allies, particularly Japan, would intervene. That uncertainty is one reason no comparison of these two countries’ numbers alone can settle who would prevail.
